What Poppy's Slow Mail Club is Actually About
Kat MusselwhiteShare
For a while I've been feeling bad about my slow mail club.
Bad that it doesn't look "cute".
That it's not Instagram-worthy, that it doesn't always have a beautifully drawn on envelope, and the letter hasn't been beautifully decorated.
I've worried that my not being very artsy was holding me back. But then I reminded myself...that's not what my slow mail club is about.
I was recently commissioned to write a personalised letter for someone going through a really tough time.
So when I sent her the personalised letter, I included the May Slow Mail Club because I felt like she needed it.
I didn't put in a business card for it, I didn't encourage her to join, I barely even acknowledged that I had included it other than a note saying "I feel like you need this right now".
The same day she received her letter, she signed up to the Slow Mail Club.
She had to actively go looking for it, and she signed up.
The moral of the story: People don't sign up for my slow Mail club because it's cute. They sign up because they need to know someone cares.
So, what is the Slow Mail Club?
Every month, for less than £10 (£7.50 to be exact), you'll receive a handwritten letter from Poppy. The letter is always handwritten, it is mostly unplanned (although they do sometimes have a basic theme), and they are intended to feel like they have come from a good friend. Someone who knows you well, who you trust, and knows exactly how to make you feel better, or to make you smile.
There's no algorithm to fight with, no screens, no notifications. In fact, these letters are designed to deliberately pull you away from them. They are letters that arrive through your door, from someone who took the time to write them, purely because they wanted you to know that someone does care.
If that's something you - or someone you love - needs right now, you are welcome here.
